From Wacky Maka to Befriending Maka

O Soul Eater how awesome are thee.

Although I’ll be playing catch up for the next week or so, putting every other series I was watching on hold to watch the first 21 episodes of Soul Eater was well worth it. I’ve been keeping myself busy with a lot of other activities as well, so it’s been nearly 100% Soul Eater since last week. I’m late to the party, but whatever, the show is probably one of the most all-around entertaining shows that I’ve watched this year. Although shows go through ups and downs, there really hasn’t been a lull through 21 episodes. There really isn’t much else one could ask for with this series so far.

A face only yandere kids could love.

Episodes 20 and 21 together were definitely one of the many peak moments in the series. Cracked, wacky Maka regains her sanity and befriends Chrona, as loli Maka no less. Toss in some battle scenes, Chrona’s back story, and a special ED sequence for episode 21 and that’s winnage for you. Befriending and scythes… Nanoha and Fate would be so proud.

I also have to give kudos to Omigawa Chiaki. I won’t go so far as to say that she’s been downright amazing; however, considering that this is her debut anime role, you have to at least tip your cap. For the most part, Maka’s voice hasn’t been that various, but there are definite fluctuations, going from calm and collected to rough and gritty, as well as low voices and high voice. Her voice is a bit nasally, but it works well with Maka (especially her laugh). And there’s been the cute chuckle and the psychotic cackle. She’s also been impressive considering that her voice is a bit one-sided (that is, it still sounds the same no matter how different it gets). It’s almost fitting that she’s working alongside Kuwashima Houko who also had a very impressive debut in Nadesico and who is easily possesses one of the most diverse voices out there. You really couldn’t ask for a better veteran to work beside. If I were to award a Seiyuu Rookie of the Year right now based on debut series, I’d probably give it to Omigawa Chiaki over Nakajima Megumi. Miss Macross Frontier has a definite edge in the singing department, but as a seiyuu, she hasn’t impressed me as much as Omigawa Chiaki has thus far in Soul Eater. Kudos.

Yet another reason to love Patty.

Tastes more like chicken rice than hamburger. Probably.

    I still don’t know whether Chrona is a guy or a girl…

But yeah, Soul Eater has been nothing but entertaining!
