Ramble: Macross Frontier – 18

Ozma lives, Grace is a man, and Brera still sucks. Needs more Cathy!

Thank goodness for a real OP being used this time. I like Seikan Hikou a lot, but that cutey OP sequence was out of place. Roy Focker rolled over in his grave after seeing that one. No more OPs like that please.

It’s Saito Ayumi a trap!

Inoue Kikuko. You know a seiyuu is awesome when he or she can voice a character you love unconditionally AND a character you utterly despise. And who wouldn’t want to stick Grace in front of the Macross Canon right about now? But before that, I’d still really like to know who or what she is and why she “tinkered” with Sheryl in the past. Inoue Kikuko’s voice never ceases to amaze me. None one would dare speak ill of Mizuho-sensei or Belldandy, and yet we have Ms./Mr. Grace O’Connor.

Pineapple can kill.

Ozma was easily one of my favorite characters, not just for his love for Fire Bomber, but because he is badass. Aside from Gurren Lagann, there are too many cool and collected characters, and there are too many whiny emo characters out there. There needs to be a resurgence of “I’ll beat your face in” characters. Gritty and rugged. Lockon Stratos plus a level or two. Ozma truly is your Roy Focker homage–Ozma nearly died the exact same way Focker died (in battle, sustaining injury without telling anyone, blood in his ship, dying next to that special someone, and perishing over some pineapple dish). I personally would have gone for pineapple cake over pineapple salad. The dead guy got pineapple salad. You rule Roy.

It’s great that he’s still around, but I was almost expecting him to pass away. Unfortunately, as much of a man crush as I have on Ozma, he’s getting kicked to the side now that he’s bedridden and almost useless to SMS and Ranka. I guess if Ozma did have to die, I’d have him plowing into a pack of Vajra singing Angel Voice. Have him wail, “Woah, woah, woah…” as Vajra are blowing up around him… now that would be an epic way to go out. Tears would be shed. Here’s to a swift recovery Ozma! I hope he’s back in his Variable Fighter before the last episode and blowing crap up for the sake of protecting the ones whom he loves.

Awesome. Klan reads Kawamori Shoji’s blog. Perhaps she’s wondering what Satelight and him are doing for Macross’ 30th anniversary. Some sort of compilation album is guaranteed, but what else? Macross Frontier OVA? New series, OVA, or movie? RANKA LEE sings LYNN MINMAY? Macross remake? Fire Bomber reunion tour? We’ll see in 2012.

Ranka inherited the Minmay gene from her mother (that is her mother, right?). Request: Flashback scene with Iijima Mari voicing Ranaka’s mother (that is, if you can convince her to do it).

Doctor Mao.

So that’s what became of Mao. Never pictured her as someone who would stick around on Mayan Island and make those love stick. But then again, I doubt Mayan Island would have survived when Earth was nearly wiped out from Zentradi attacks during Space War. At least we know what happened to 1 past Macross character. Hint, hint Mr. Kawamori.

We still love you Sheryl… even if you CD is half off.

Is Sheryl going to get a break soon? It seems like she’s been dealt a crappy hand for the last 7 or 8 episodes now. Ranka is in the spotlight, she’s received the Jail Scaglietti treatment, she’s dying, and she doesn’t have umbrella. She deserves a mulligan right about now. What I don’t get is this whole V-type infection. Why does Sheryl have it? And why did Grace pick her up in the first place? I can hardly picture Grace as Ms./Mr. Altruism. Nonetheless, this spectacular fall from grace (no pun intended), has to be setting up Sheryl as a key player as we near the end of the series. I’m not a betting man, but my money is on the idea that the Frontier fleet is going to need 2 Songstresses of of the Galaxy.

blissmo: Why do all you bloggers encourage incest? No wonder people think anime is bad for the morals… ;)

Besides, Alto could choose not to choose… again. But hey! At least his brother’s getting him to visit home for the first time in months, if not years. Whether the Sheryl talk will get anything useful out of it, information-wise (Ozma might want to know about Grace and the Galaxy-Vajra connection) or relationship-wise will have to wait for Thursday.

I think Sheryl is going to get over it soon enough because that’s the kind of character I see in her. Anyone would be upset if they found out they were going to die young, but the beauty of life is not knowing how or when you’re going to die, at least, to me it is lols. I think she pulls through in the next episode with Alto’s help, leaving Ranka by herself with the hottie Brera.

You bring up a good point. What I’ve been wondering for awhile now is what exactly is causing the glowing in her abdomen. Was something implanted in her or perhaps was she born like that?

Kabitzin: I don’t think Ranka’s so much infected (else they’d have detected the V-Type Infection during the blood tests in Ep 2, if not earlier), but rather that she’s what Sheryl was supposed to be (but didn’t become) – someone tied intimately to the Vajra, enough to control them.

That’s why Sheryl was initially made – to see if they could use V-Type Infections to create such an individual perhaps. But alas for Grace… her experiment failed, while Ranka (apparent daughter of Ranshe Mei) was what Grace had been wanting all along.

Awesome catch on Klan Klein’s favorite blogs! I wonder if this means Ranka is also infected, especially since her belly keeps glowing purple.

Given that this is Macross, saying “Oh, they’re alive” would take away from some of the mystery in-universe as well as retread old ground in a way Kawamori doesn’t want to. References are fine (Fire Bomber music, Eden animals, dramas based on the old triangle), but actually REFERRING to most of them in the present tense seems to be verboten. Mao Nome having been with the 117th fleet is about the only nod we can probably expect, and it’s not even clear what her current status is… just as it’s not clear what happened to Minmay and company even though we know where they were.

I definitely understand your point, but I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Not everything has a happy ending – Macross had Earth nearly completely annihilated by the Zentradi, so this isn’t a universe which goes for happy endings so much as ‘life goes on… most of the time’. Thus, having Megaroad-01 vanish is appropriate, and leaving its fate unknown is fine.

@Haesslich: I agree with you to an extent. However, I would have rather they just faded off like the Macross 7 fleet instead of “vanishing.” Had they rode off into the sunset, and they left it at that, that’s cool with me. But instead they vanished, leaving us to speculate the worse instead of speculate the best.

I’m content with leaving Megaroad-01 alone – if it’s missing… well, that only adds to the Minmay and Hikaru/Misa legend, right? They saved the world, then led the first colonization mission… and vanished. Best to know when to end a story, otherwise you get ones that drag on… and on… and on…
