Continued problem with Zero no Tsukaima: Louise’s rage

I seriously must be a masochist for still having a slight interest in this series.

Really… when exactly did Zero no Tsukaima begin its plummet? It was somewhere in the choppiness of Futatsuki no Kishi, but I can’t remember exactly when. Images of Colbert-sensei and Agnes going emo come to mind though. Regardless, it doesn’t matter at this point. Princess no Rondo has been hovering around below average since the first episode. At this point, one can only hope it stays above the Mendoza Line and avoids complete suckage.

Louise’s tsundere novelty wore off back in the first season. She redeemed herself a bit in Futatsuki no Kishi by finally accepting her feelings for Saito and getting over that ojou-sama complex she cherishes; however, that was all undone by her tirade during the final moments of that season. With Princess no Rondo, I’ll give Lousie credit for trying, but her “BAKA INU!” routine is completely dead and buried. It’s part of her character, yes, but the frequency and intensity of it is where the annoyance resonates.

We know Saito loves Louise. We also know Saito has a penis, and thus cannot help acting the way he does. However, he definitely tries to behave and his affection of Louise is genuinely there and expressed. With Louise, we know she loves Saito; we’ve seen her admit it. We also know she’s stubborn when it comes to expressing her romantic feelings. Yet, she still, after 2 seasons and change, has her explosive outbursts. At this point in the story, those should be less frequent and much less intense. Did the script writers forget that Louise and Saito have had strides in their relationship and that Louise’s antics are counterintuitive? Butting heads is expected, but the whiplashing, void explosions, and full Kugamiya Rie rage absolutely needs to be de-emphasized. J.C. Staff has relied on that trick for way too long now and it’s making Princess no Rondo even more unwatchable. I haven’t read the novels, so is she like this at this point in the story? Does her violent stubbornness continue this far?

I am not advocating the idea that Louise give up her prime characteristics–Louise without her tsundere goodness is no Louise Francoise le Blanc de la Valliere–but am advocating that her personality be expressed differently. Louise can still have her jealous and aggressive moments, as well as her lovestruck moments. In episode 4, when Saito said he wanted to talk about Tiffania instead of have dinner with Louise, instead of Louise flaming in anger and throwing Saito out, make the anger productive. Louise can still get pissed off, but having her say why she was pissed off (or even hinting at it) and eliminating the flying silverware would have fit the story better. Same personalities, same outburst, but you’re no retarding the plot’s development.

There are plenty of legitimate complaints about Zero no Tsukaima ranging from poor plot pacing to excessive reliance on fanservice to anticlimactic endings. Really at this point, it’s “pick your poison.” However, for me it’s the poor treatment of Saito and Louise’s relationship that has consistently left an unsatisfying taste in my mouth. Why spend 25 episodes over 2 years bringing two character together, only to waste it by having one of them act like it never happened. Why sour things just to keep a character’s image the same as it was in episode 1 of season 1? Character development should be a good thing. If continually highlighting the extreme of Louise’s tsuntsun side and her theatrical jealousy are more important that character development and plot progression, I probably should have stopped with the first season.

At least we still have Noto Mamiko.

just stumbled upon your post, and i understand where you are coming from, but rejoice friend. I have read the novels and know that things get steadily better. the end of the second season of the anime takes place right when louise starts her decent into nearly outright expressing her feelings for the guy. i will not spoil it for you completely, but the best line from the novels was in the second to most recently released one when, as she is about to be forever separated with saito (or so she thinks), she says: “im glad that you got to see me smile so many times, because after today, i’ll never smile again”

    hang in there!

Even with all that, Tsunderekko are still great >__<

@53rg10: Sure she has the right to get mad, but blowing him to bits at the level she does it at is out of character at this point in the story. Like I said, she can still have that personality, but have her do it in a different way. What’s shown now demonstrate little growth as a character. Plus Saito has mellowed out a bit and is obviously devoted to Louise.

Well, it IS wrong for Saito to touch other girls…so Louise has all the right to blow him to bits! ^_^

i really can’t stand tiffania as a character and they need to break louise out of that jealouse tsundere mold because it is getting boring

I’m also disappointed in Louise after 2 seasons and 4 episodes… Tiffania is quite a refreshing character. I really do like ZNT as a whole but sometimes I just feel the urge to smack the characters. I believe her behavior had me face-palming a few times this season *sigh* Well anyways, I’m going to add you to my blogroll ^^

I’m not not saying do away with her tsuntsun side, but work it into the plot better and tone it down a bit. She can remain an ojou-sama and retain her tsundere nature (and rightfully should), but the way it’s being shown is stagnating the series. Naru in Love Hina remained a tsunderekko to the very last page, but the ways it was expressed adjusted to the plot. Louise’s character has definitely grown since the beginning of the series, but we lose sight of that and she regresses back to her old ways when she blows up. Fictional character or not, that’s poor character and plot development. It’s the classic 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

As for Tiffania…. I have a strange affinity towards her as well. :D

Hehe, I happen to like Tiffania somehow, and am glad to see her as a rival to Louise.

Just like you, I prefer Louise in her dere state much more than her abusive and explosive character. But I actually don’t find it that unnatural for her to stay the kind of person she is. The question whether Louise is a believable character or not probably a ridiculous thought since it’s a fictive character anyways, but I really think that real-life-tsundere don’t change into sweet girls, even after a long time. On the one hand, the nice scene with Louise being dere in bed at the beginning of season 3 episode 1 made me pick up the series again; but on the other hand, I find it rather comprehensible that she’s still the ojousama she ever was. (Especially since I suppose most people who watch ZnT probably like tsundere in the first place.)
