When Aria subs fail…

Horrible grammar makes Ai-chan cry.

Thank you Aquamarine for ruining 2 very good episodes of Aria with lousy grammar. Watching the raws back in March was a lot more enjoyable than what was released today. The dialog before the OP ever played in episode 12 was riddled with typos and poor grammar. Native-speaking or not, crappy subs are crappy. We have all experienced sub par speedsubs before, but this is heightened because it is Aria and because the errors are in almost every other line. Do the subs make sense? For the most part yes, but the mistakes are so distracting that even someone who struggled in language arts would catch them. Two beautiful episodes that are actually very touching get bogged down. _|-|O… What a shame. Aria deserves better.

He what? He wants Quiznos for lunch?

You don’t want you gondola scratching up the furniture, now do you?

I’d be lying if I said these subs were awesome.

I AM GUNDAM!

Yosh … ! Do your best deshou?

People watching the 12th episode of the 3rd season of Aria appreciate the tidbit.

Hard work and guts pay off. \o/

O.o

It’s because it was explained it so well the first time.

ALART!

I suddenly want an IT’S-IT.

Even Athena is confused…

“Hazukashii serifu kinshi!”

“Ehh?!!”

  3. I’m entertained especially for the OP, or is it the ED? The difference is too great to be true and I don’t recognize some of the Japanese words themselves (those yellow words on top). Did the fansub team invent those “Japanese words”?

However, we can’t expect accuracy when things are free. ;)

  4. @Hynavian: I didn’t pay much attention to the OP or ED because the font was ugly. If they were wise, they would have lifted them from HnK or CrystalNova. I did find it amusing that Yokogao, the insert song in both episodes, was untranslated. Also, it is very true about not expecting accuracy for something that is free, but I do except something halfway readable. :D

  8. Amusing! Thank God I never bother with subs these days.

  9. @xxxx & sikatgigi: I did say they make sense and I did watch them, but the mistakes are very distracting. Native English-speaking or not, even the most basic amd quickest proofreading would have fixed a good chunk of the mistakes.

  10. “All your base are belong to us.” or something.

As a grammar teacher it is rather painful to see something like that, but I can also appreciate the complexities of the English sentence structure and how, much of the time, it makes no sense why a particular pronoun works somewhere and why it doesn’t. ^_^

  11. Aquamarine’s first project is those two eps of Aria. So it’s natural if they make a mistake, well maybe they can release 2nd version with a better translation.

I can understand their feeling coz i’m from indonesia too. Not many indonesian people is good with english.

  13. I was the translator for HnK for the last half dozen of episodes of Origination, and I already had translated the last three episodes before they decided to drop ARIA. Actually, I had been getting some friends together to sub those last few episodes to at least finish the job - however, I was pretty busy with school nowadays so I didn’t have time, and since I heard that Aquamarine had completed it anyway, I stopped caring…

But I wasn’t aware of the pretty horrible screw-ups there… Popoi-nyoo! Heck, that’s a lesson to learn! Next time, we’ll sub the rush of the water, the splashing of the waves, the clapping of the hands, the chirping of the birds, and last but not least, the delighful breaths and sighs of all the characters.
Also important TL notes. Because everyone starts watching ARIA from 3rd season ep 12, it’s important to remind people to watch at least episode 11 to get all the references. Wait, what is a Gondola?

Seriously, if I didn’t know BSS picked up ep 11 (don’t know if they are continuing but I assume they are), I would consider getting back to my script, have it transchecked, timed, typeset, and then released. Bah.

  14. @natsuneko: BSS released 12 and 13 a couple days ago.
